The Intelect Legend XT 5 cm2 Sound Head, Chattanooga Product Number 27383, is a replacement therapeutic ultrasound applicator designed for compatible Chattanooga Intelect Legend XT and Intelect Transport ultrasound systems. 1-Year warranty.
The 5 cm² applicator is the standard general-purpose sound head used with the Intelect Legend XT combination therapy system.
During ultrasound treatment, the sound head converts electrical energy from the therapy unit into high-frequency mechanical sound waves that are transmitted through the applicator and coupling gel into the treatment area.
Compatible Intelect Legend XT Units
The Intelect Legend XT 5 cm2 Sound Head is compatible with Legend XT systems equipped with therapeutic ultrasound, including:
- 2760 – Intelect Legend XT 2-Channel Combination
- 2788 – Intelect Legend XT 4-Channel Combination

Electrotherapy-only Legend XT units do not provide an ultrasound output and therefore cannot use a sound head unless the system is configured for ultrasound.

What Does the 27383 Sound Head Do?
The Chattanooga 27383 Sound Head delivers therapeutic ultrasound from the Intelect Legend XT to the patient’s treatment area.
Ultrasound gel is applied between the sound head and the patient’s skin to provide proper acoustic coupling. The clinician then moves the applicator continuously over the treatment area according to the selected ultrasound parameters and treatment protocol.
The Chattanooga Intelect Legend XT provides both:
- 1 MHz ultrasound
- 3.3 MHz ultrasound
The selected frequency changes how ultrasound energy is distributed through tissue and allows the clinician to select treatment parameters appropriate for the targeted area.
5 cm² Applicator Size
The 5 cm² sound head is a versatile, general-purpose applicator size suitable for many commonly treated anatomical areas and comes standard with the units originally.

Dual-Frequency Ultrasound – 1 and 3.3 MHz
The Chattanooga 27383 ultrasound applicator supports the dual-frequency ultrasound capabilities of compatible Intelect systems.
The Intelect Legend XT provides:
1 MHz and 3.3 MHz ultrasound frequencies
and supports:
- Continuous ultrasound
- 10% pulsed duty cycle
- 20% pulsed duty cycle
- 50% pulsed duty cycle
- 100% continuous operation
Treatment frequency, intensity, duty cycle, duration, and application technique should be selected by the treating healthcare professional according to the patient’s condition and prescribed treatment protocol.
Watertight Sound Head
Chattanooga designed the Intelect ultrasound applicators with a watertight construction, allowing compatible systems to be used for appropriate underwater ultrasound techniques when clinically indicated.
The applicator should still be regularly inspected for physical damage, cable deterioration, or damage to the sound head face.
Pre-Calibrated Replacement Applicator
The 27383 Intelect Legend XT 5 cm2 Sound Head is supplied as a pre-calibrated replacement ultrasound applicator.
Compatible Chattanooga Intelect systems are designed to recognize their ultrasound transducers, helping the system operate with the appropriate applicator.
A replacement sound head should still be inspected and tested according to the manufacturer’s service procedures before being placed into clinical use.
Sound Head Warming Feature
Compatible Intelect systems include a sound head warming feature designed to warm the ultrasound applicator before treatment.
This can help improve patient comfort compared with initially placing a cold metal ultrasound applicator against the treatment area.
When Should an Ultrasound Sound Head Be Replaced?
An Intelect Legend XT sound head may require inspection, calibration, repair, or replacement if you experience:

- Treatment stopping when the cable is moved
- Damage to the applicator cable
- Cracks or physical damage to the sound head

Dropping an ultrasound applicator can damage the internal transducer even when exterior damage is not immediately obvious.

Intelect Legend XT 5 cm2 Sound Head is designed for the Intelect Legend XT and compatible original Intelect Transport ultrasound systems.
It should not be confused with sound heads used on other generations of Chattanooga equipment.

A proper ultrasound coupling medium is required between the 27383 sound head and the treatment surface.
Ultrasound gel eliminates the air gap between the applicator and the skin, allowing ultrasound energy to be efficiently transferred into the treatment area.
The sound head should not be operated against the skin without the appropriate coupling medium.
